The COVID-19 epidemic has again made the importance of media and communication visible. There is an immediate, practical need for more effective communication to mitigate the pandemic, save lives and protect society’s capacity for action. Further, there is a pressing need for accurate knowledge and sound expertise.
Nevertheless, because we do not live in an ideal world, we have also witnessed flows of disinformation, public contestation of science and expertise as well as public questioning of the mainstream media of their role in communicating the pandemic. Based on recent accounts of the sociology of expertise and theories of the evolving media landscape, we will analyse the public dynamics of the corona crisis in Finland.
We will conduct a series of representative public surveys, analyse media discourses, and interview the key players dealing with the epidemic in Finland.
