Abstract:
Cultural Expertise in Europe: Theories, Ethics, and Stories
This talk will focus on the genesis and the development of cultural expertise as theoretical framework for the variety of engagements of social scientists with law in Europe. It will position cultural expertise vis-à-vis the theories and concepts that have inspired the definition of cultural expertise, outline the set of ethical references that have been developed to support its use, and explore the main components of the stories that research participants have shared during the process of data-collection. The talk will conclude with considerations on the advantages and disadvantages of cultural expertise, and some proposals for future developments in Europe.
