The One-Dimensional Memory
-Or how the EU learned to stop worrying and love the Holocaust memory
“Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb”, is a black comedy film by Stanley Kubrick from 1964 that satirizes the Cold War fears of a nuclear conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States. One of the most famous quotes from the film is “Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!” The line is uttered by President Merkin Muffley (Peter Sellers) in front of the political representatives during the deliberations on war against Soviet. Through this line, Sellers succeeds in showing the hypocritical nature of man; the desire to blame everyone else of starting a fight (while at the same time beating up the person next to you).
During my presentation I will metaphorically discuss the hypocritic nature of EU’s official approach to Holocaust memory in general, and criminalization of Holocaust denial in particular.
About the speaker:
Karolina Stenlund is a Postdoctoral researcher from Sweden working at EuroStorie. In her research she investigates how Holocaust memory became a foundational European narrative connected to the Human rights discourse. She holds a PhD from Uppsala and has been a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School.
