Doctoral programme in Chemistry and Molecular Sciences (CHEMS) is one of the doctoral programme within the Doctoral School of Natural Sciences. It is organized with collaboration between Department of Chemistry, Department of Physics, Faculty of Pharmacy, and Department of Biosciences at the University of Helsinki. All doctoral students in the ion exchange for nuclear waste treatment and for recycling group belong to CHEMS.
CHEMS focuses on basic studies in experimental, theoretical and computational chemistry, from small molecules to macromolecules, with research themes involving synthesis, isolation techniques, characterization, analytical methods and spectroscopy. Every year, several university funded doctoral candidate positions are awarded by CHEMS through a highly competitive application procedure.
Valtteri Suorsa completed both his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Radiochemistry at the Department of Chemistry, University of Helsinki. His master thesis investigates the interaction of radionuclides with clay minerals (clay colloids to be exact). Part of the thesis was done in Karslruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany. He also worked as research assistants in bentonite erosion, radionuclide sorption, and industrially funded cutting-edge radionuclide removal processes. During leisure time, he enjoys many sports, fishing (including ice-fishing), playing music with his band, and (most importantly) beer-tasting.
