Campus Bioblitz

When we launched the Viikki Campus Bioblitz in spring 2024, the goal was simple: to discover the species that share our campus. The response from our community exceeded expectations — over 120 observers take part into the Campus Bioblitz each year!

Although the first year was mostly about identifying which species are present on campus. Since, the Bioblitzes are beginning to reveal how biodiversity changes over time: which species have been observed regularly, which have been observed earlier or later in each year, and which groups are still surprisingly missing or underrepresented. The Bioblitz is gradually turning our campuses into living laboratories, where repetition matters as much as novelty.
By the end of September 2024, just above 4 000 observations were entered in the iNaturalist Campus Bioblitz project 'Viikki Bioblitz 2024'.
By the end of September 2025, about 2 000 and 600 observations were recorded in the iNaturalist Campus Bioblitz projects 'Viikki Bioblitz 2025' and 'Kumpula Bioblitz 2025', respectively.

Table: Number of taxonomic observations on the Viikki campus. Difference between 2024 and 2025 might not be representative of true loss of species, but rather of lower total number of observations in 2025 compared to 2024. Table is only based on research graded observations as of January 2026.
