The nature trail showcases the diverse species of the area, with a special focus on the plant and insect species of the campus meadows. The trail consists of six informational boards installed around the campus. Following the mapped route, the trail spans approximately 1.2 kilometers. The first informational board is located next to the Info Centre Korona.
This species survey event sees over 120 participating observers each year since 2024. Together, they map animal, plant and fungal species across the different campus habitats throughout the growing season (April to September). In 2024, the Bioblitz community collected a total of 4500 observations, and 990 taxa (not all at the species level).
In September 2024, 47 third-grade students from Itäkeskus Peruskoulu visited Viikki campus to explore the University and its biodiversity through both indoor and outdoor activities, including the Viikki Campus Bioblitz. The enthusiastic young participants documented over 170 sightings of various insects, plants, mammals, and mushrooms on the iNaturalist app within half an hour, adding valuable information to the ongoing Bioblitz project on the campus. Schools are welcome to visit the meadows at the University of Helsinki and record their own observations through iNaturalist.
