We investigate the ecology of the human gut microbiota, the ecosystem closest to us. We focus especially on infants and small children, because the gut microbiota of infants is very susceptible to external influences, and thus malleable, and has long-lasting effects on the health of the host, offering an opportunity to promote long-term health. The aim of our research is to characterize the development and functioning of the infant gut microbiota as an ecosystem and to develop treatments and practices to support and restore the natural development of the health-promoting gut microbiota in infants.
We work in the Faculty of Medicine, at the Meilahti campus.
