In 2014, the target languages of the HALS field excursion were the indigenous languages (mainly the isolates Nivkh and Ainu) of the Sakhalin and Hokkaido islands in the Northern Pacific. The excursion was organized by Professor Juha Janhunen, Dr. Ekaterina Gruzdeva and Dr. Riikka Länsisalmi. As the result of the excursion and the associated events, an article volume was published in the series Studia Orientalia.
