Using machine-learning, a literature review of >14,000 articles on ecosystem service (ES) articles, we find:
1) ES research has a consistent and large natural science base, with research on a broad range of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems
2) Social science research on ES research is progressively becoming more integrative of pluralistic values and governance-oriented
