Diabetes And Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Introduction

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent cause of liver disease worldwide. NAFLD is commonly associated with the metabolic syndrome ('Metabolic NAFLD' and predisposes to more severe liver disease (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and cirrhosis) as well as to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Our research focuses on understanding acquired and genetic causes of NAFLD as well as pathogenesis of both 'Metabolic NAFLD' and 'Genetic NAFLD'. We also aim to develop in one large EU project new diagnostic tools for NAFLD.
