The cyanobacterial research group focuses on the ecology of cyanoabcteria and the natural products they produce.

We have projects in Baltic sea ecology, natural product discovery through genome mining, the discovery of new natural products and their structural chemistry amongst others. We maintain the UHCC culture collection of cyanobacteria at the University of Helsinki, which contains more than 1200 strains. This research is funded by a NordForsk Nordic center of Excellency (NORDAQUA), a EU Twinnings project (Blue&Green), BONUS (BLUEPRINT) and the Academy of Finland (Brazilian project). and Jane and Aatos Erkko foundation (anticancer and antifungal compounds).
