In the KOKOAA project, we are studying functional communication, i.e. communication in everyday situations, in people with aphasia. We are examining the use of other means of communication beyond speech (e.g., gestures and facial expressions), the impact of communication partners, and the importance of communication situations. We are also investigating the connection between functional communication and the linguistic and non-linguistic skills of people with aphasia. Our goal is to produce a more comprehensive picture of the functional communication of Finnish-speaking people with aphasia to help further develop and support speech therapy assessment and rehabilitation.
