A detailed list of equipment and gear needed is provided by the course leader. Please note that borrowing or buying items such as scissors, tweezers, rain gear, or boots is not possible from the station. Especially participants of the field courses should be prepared for changing weather conditions and for working outside.
Course participants are accommodated in double rooms in the student dormitory. Keys can be picked up from the reception in the main building between 9am - 3pm. If you arrive in the evening, make sure you have the information about the door code and where to find the keys. Front doors are locked in the evenings, you can ask the course leader for the code.
Please take linen and towels with you, it is not allowed to use sleeping bags at the station. You can find a kitchen equipped with basic kitchenware for general use in every dormitory. Pets are unfortunately not allowed in the dormitory rooms. On the day of departure on weekdays, please empty your room and return the keys to the reception by 10:00 am. On weekends there is no official check-out time, you can drop the key in the mailbox outside the reception in the main building.
Full board includes three meals per day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Please inform your special dietary requirements to the course leader well in advance, also inform if you will not eat meals at the station’s restaurant. Our kitchen needs this information at latest two weeks before the course.
General sauna turns are available on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Sauna is included to the full board.
You can pay the course fee in the reception on weekdays between 9am - 3pm. Please show your student card when paying.
Please inform the course leader and the station´s reception about cancellations as soon as possible. Non-notified cancellations will be charged one day’s full board fee.
Tvärminne Zoological station is located approximately 17 km from Hanko and 30 km from Tammisaari. Nearest shops and public services are in Hanko. There is no public transport to or from the station, nearest train station is at Lappohja, approximately 14 km from the station.
Please note that the area around TZS, including islands, is protected as a nature conservation area. In this area, sampling of material, berries, plants, or animals is not allowed without a permit, also fishing is prohibited. Walk along tracks in the area. Visiting islands is not allowed for courses.
