The course leader always has the main responsibility for the course participants. The course leader should be also acquainted with instructions for participants. Please note that it is not possible to borrow or buy gear such as scissors, tweezers, rain clothing or boots from the station.
Fill in the electronic course application form with the details of your course and participants well in advance, latest one month before the course to confirm the availability of facilities and resources. The course form can be updated later if needed by using the the confirmation link that you will get via email. If you have any problems, please contact the office.
Courses can use boats, field and laboratory equipment, aquarium and laboratory facilities, and workrooms on certain terms. Use must be reserved well in advance using the electronic course form and is liable to charge. We will confirm the availability of the resources after receiving the electronic course form.
TZS has two lecture rooms (lecture room 1 and lecture room 2). Lecture rooms are for 40 to 50 persons. Microscopes are primarily used in lecture room 1. The student dormitory has a room with a fireplace, which can be used as a lecture room for ca 40 persons.
Use of the laboratory facilities and microscopes is booked through the electronic course form. For laboratory analyses please use the separate laboratory order form in addition to the electronic course form. You can get more detailed information about the laboratory facilities and services from our laboratory personnel.
Use of boats excluding rowing boats is liable to charge and must be agreed before the course by contacting the TZS technical staff. Use of the smaller motorboats with outboard engines requires that each boat has a captain with a valid boat permit from the station. Course participants are allowed to act as captain if they participate in and pass the boat training with the TZS technical staff. After completed boat training it is possible to get access to book smaller boats through the online booking calendar. Rowing boats can be booked using the electronic course form.

Accommodation and dining for course participants and for course leaders will be reserved and charged based on the information given in the course form. The course leader is responsible for sending the electronic course form well in advance to the TZS office. Dietary requirements should be at the restaurant at the latest two weeks before the start of the course. Full board can only be invoiced in the case of course teachers (for invoice terms and address, please contact the office). Please also inform us beforehand if someone will not eat at the station. Course participants pay their accommodation and dining costs in the office during office hours.
NB! Send the door code to participants arriving in the evening before arrival to the station.
Tvärminne Zoological Station is located approximately 17 km from Hanko and 30 km from Tammisaari. Nearest shops and public services are in Hanko. There is no public transport to or from the station, the nearest train station is at Lappohja, approximately 14 km from the station.
Please note that the area around TZS, including islands, is protected as a nature conservation area. In this area, sampling of material, berries, plants, or animals is not allowed without a permit, also fishing is prohibited. Walk along tracks in the area. Visiting islands is not allowed for courses.
