Europe's Declining Birth Rates and the Exploitation of Global South Labour in Health and Social Care

WHAT IS POSSIBLE with Valentine Guruuswa / Unionizing Healthcare Workers

This talk will examine the intersection of Europe's declining birth rates and its reliance on cheap labour from the Global South to sustain its health and social care systems. It will explore how imperialist structures perpetuate this dynamic, creating a cycle of dependency and exploitation that exacerbates global inequities. Drawing on the speaker's experiences from Britain, it will also highlight how migrant workers are increasingly resisting these conditions and organising for better pay, rights, and dignity. In addition, Ruth Kaboi-Mattila will provide remarks on experiences of working and organizing in Finland. The event warmly welcomes migrant workers of all backgrounds, members of African associations in Finland, union organizers and academics.

There will be small snacks and drinks available during the session in particular for those going on or coming off care work shifts.

Wednesday 9th April 2025, 16:00 – 18:00

Location: University of Helsinki, Main Building (Room U3039), Fabianinkatu 33, 00170 Helsinki. Register here.
