Key objectives

NUEI leverages the strong competencies of individual Nordic countries in Edge Intelligence to promote the Nordic university cooperation through three main objectives.
Strengthen joint research on edge intelligence in the Nordic countries

This project brings together experts within AI/ML, edge computing, wireless communication, and Extended Reality (XR) from four top universities in four Nordic countries, which allows us to tackle fundamental challenges with joint efforts to accelerate the necessary research towards massively scalable edge intelligence systems. We see, in particular, three domains to be of key importance: (a) Edge architectures, (b) Distributed / Hierarchical inference, and (c) Semantic communications.

Develop use cases with industries and accelerate exploitation of Edge Intelligence

The project brings not only different competencies, but also different technical/testbed capabilities, which provides multiple excellent opportunities for the consortium to develop novel use cases with industrial stakeholders.

Implement a streamlined training, networking, and dissemination on Edge Intelligence

To facilitate research collaboration, researcher mobility will be arranged across partner universities. To create impact beyond the project period, a streamlined training will be implemented combining summer schools and courses at PhD and MSc levels. The summer schools will open to not only students in the partners but also other students in Europe. We will disseminate and communicate the research outcomes to different communities following the FAIR principle, as well as organise special issues and workshops on Edge Intelligence in prestigious journals and conferences.
