On 3 March 2026, experts, policymakers, and industry representatives gathered in Brussels for the lunch briefing “LULUCF Climate Solutions and Competitiveness in Forestry”, organized by the Permanent Representation of Finland to the EU together with the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The discussion focused on how climate action in the land-use sector can support both carbon sinks and the competitiveness of the European bioeconomy.
HIKET Research Director Tuomo Kalliokoski presented the HIKET project as part of Finland’s efforts to strengthen the scientific infrastructure for monitoring carbon sinks and emissions in the land-use sector. The project brings together measurements, models, and multi-source data to improve understanding of carbon balances and reduce uncertainties, contributing to more transparent and evidence-based LULUCF assessments.
HIKET tests this framework at a national scale and provides a proof-of-concept for an integrated land-use carbon intelligence architecture.
“We propose to do this also on EU level. The fact is that in EU both the regulatory ambition and the scientific capability exist, but the missing piece is integration at EU scale”
Dialogue is needed to clarify options on how to explore scalability of the carbon intelligence framework at European level.
