Niku Määttänen appointed professor at the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics

Niku Määttänen, PhD (economics), has been appointed professor of macroeconomics at the Helsinki GSE. The position, based at the University of Helsinki, was founded on a donation made by the Bank of Finland to the Helsinki GSE. Määttänen will assume the position on 1 August 2020.

Niku Määttänen has served in a number of positions at the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy (ETLA) from 2003, working as its research director as of 2015. Throughout 2009, he served as a fixed-term professor of economics at the Helsinki School of Economics.

Määttänen’s research activities are focused on macroeconomics and public finance, often combining the themes. Among other things, he has investigated questions pertaining to the taxation of housing equity and financial savings, the effect of changes in borrowing constraints and income distribution on housing prices, as well as the effect of the pension system on income distribution and labour supply incentives. For a long time, Määttänen has actively contributed to developing the teaching provided in macroeconomics at the Helsinki GSE.

“Niku Määttänen is one of Finland’s foremost scholars specialised in macroeconomics. His contribution to research and education in macroeconomics at the Helsinki GSE will be considerable. Macroeconomics is a focus area of the discipline of economics at the University of Helsinki, now profoundly boosted by the donation from the Bank of Finland and Määttänen’s appointment,” says Hannu Vartiainen, academic director of the Helsinki GSE.

Määttänen received his doctorate from Pompeu Fabra University in 2004. In 2014, he was appointed docent of economics at Aalto University.

The mission of the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics, established in the spring of 2018, is to expand the scope and improve the quality of education and research in economics in Finland, as well as to promote cooperation between economics and other fields of science. The Helsinki GSE is a unit jointly managed by the University of Helsinki, Aalto University and the Hanken School of Economics.
