William Nelson: The Extreme Right in Europe and America: Are they Different or the Same?
In his talk, professor Nelson will argue that racism is the foundation of right-wing American thought but that protection of traditional Christian values had to be added to that foundation to give the American right political traction. He also poses the question whether something similar to this combination is present in Europe.
William Nelson, a Judge Edward Weinfeld Professorship of Law in New York University School of Law, has been active as a legal historian since the publication of his first history article in the New York University Annual Survey of American Law in 1966. Over the intervening years, Nelson has published two prize-winning books, eleven other books, and numerous articles in leading law reviews and history journals. His latest publications include E Pluribus Unum: How the Common Law Helped Unify and Liberate Colonial America, 1607-1776 (Oxford University Press, 2019), and the fourth volume to The Common Law in Colonial America (Oxford University Press, 2008-2018).
