Mehrnoosh Farzamfar (University of Helsinki): Migration and Security: Applying human rights-based soft security measures in response to the contemporary security related challenges of immigration.

The contemporary terrorist-related incidents have raised fundamental questions about the right to seek asylum and the States’ responsibility to protect the human rights of immigrants. In my PhD dissertation, I analyse if there is an inherent conflict between safeguarding the national security of the State and the safety of the host societies, as opposed to protecting the rights of newcomers. In this research, I argue how there could be a reconciliation between conserving the national security of States and safety of the host societies, on the one hand, and ensuring the human rights of immigrants, on the other hand, by adopting a human rights-based approach to security issues, instead of securitization of immigration.
