FOR-013 project course: New opening for circularity of wood products

One of the main goals of Viikki Wood and Forest Innovation Hub is to develop innovation teaching at the University of Helsinki. The first initiative is an innovation challenge project course focusing on the circular economy of wood products to be included in the upcoming master level innovation study module.
Lessons in circular economy, innovation, and teamwork

The FOR-013 Circular Wood Product Innovation Challenge project course is open to master’s students at the University of Helsinki, regardless of their field of study. The course is organized as part of the Innovation Challenge by  and Viikki Wood & Forest Innovation Hub, which brings together companies and students to seek new solutions for the circular economy of wood and wood-based products. 

This five-credit course provides students hands-on experience in teamwork, ideation, prototyping, and the pursuit of real societal impact and implementation opportunities. Throughout the course, student teams receive support from experts, mentors, and stakeholders. The course is organized in collaboration with , Lahti campus. At the end of the course, in December 2025, student groups from both institutions will present their ideas to a jury in Lahti.

The course also includes fexcursions to relevant sites. For example, students will take part in on 30th October 2025, where the company category teams of the Innovation Challenge will pitch their solutions. In addition, students will attend a pitching workshop a .

The course is led by Assistant professor in innovation management Angelina Korsunova. In recent years, the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry has launched and piloted bachelor’s level innovation and entrepreneurship study module (). which is now being expanded with a new master’s level study module, to be launched in 2026. Viikki Wood and Forest Innovation Hub is committed to the development of innovation teaching.
