Patomäki’s World Statehood examines the idea of global political integration from a multidisciplinary perspective. The book raises profound questions about whether elements of world statehood already exist, if the historical trajectory points toward greater planetary integration, and under what conditions could further elements of world statehood be viable. Patomäki’s processual approach offers an open-ended exploration of cosmopolitanism, global governance mechanisms like a greenhouse gas tax, and the viability of world parliamentary systems, all framed by historical trends and future possibilities.

In contrast, Tännsjö’s From Despotism to Democracy confronts the urgency of global existential risks, such as climate change and nuclear war, by proposing a controversial path to global democracy. Tännsjö argues that enlightened global despotism – a temporary, centralized authority – is the necessary first step toward establishing a democratic world government. His work delves into the moral implications of potential failure, the tragedy of the commons, and the philosophical significance of humanity’s survival.

At the event, Patomäki and Tännsjö will present their differing visions, sparking a rich dialogue about the philosophical, political, and practical challenges of global governance. Koskenniemi’s expert commentary will add depth to the discussion, highlighting the tensions between realism and idealism – or apology and utopia – in these proposals. Key debates will include: Can a world state emerge without conflict? Is global despotism a pragmatic solution or an ethical compromise? How do these models address humanity’s shared vulnerabilities?

The event will be streamed live and later published on Youtube, providing a platform for wider participation and reflection. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with leading thinkers and critical ideas shaping the discourse on global governance and humanity’s future.
