Viikki Life Science Campus

Viikki Campus is the largest Life Science Campus in Finland, a community of 1,900 high-quality forward-looking experts in teaching and research and 6,000 students.
Welcome to Viikki Campus

Faculties of Agriculture and Forestry, Biological and Environmental Sciences, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine work in close collaboration with University’s cross-faculty and cross-campus institutes HiLIFE Helsinki Institute of Life Science, an institute supporting high quality life science research and HELSUS Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science, a research unit in sustainability science.

The Finnish Museum of Natural History (LUOMUS) is an independent institute of the University of Helsinki. Research at LUOMUS has close connections with the science done in Viikki campus area. The collections of the Finnish Museum of Natural History, Luomus, include botanical, zoological, geological and paleontological specimens from all over the world. In all, the collections of Luomus hold over 13 million samples and they serve research in the fields of biology and geology.

Cross-disciplinary networks and projects

Several cross-disciplinary networks and projects connecting various organizations are directed from Viikki campus. Such as HOH Helsinki One Health, a research network to resolve emerging health problems concerning animal and human populations worldwide, Thriving Nature –project, which strengthens the University of Helsinki’s profile in research into biological resilience, Finnish Platform for Pharmaceutical Research network FinPharma, and The Viikki Plant Science Centre (ViPS).

In addition, the following national research institutes are located on the Viikki Campus: the Finnish Food Authority, Finnish Environment Institute SYKE and Luke Natural Resources Institute Finland.

Research infrastructures

The Campus has up-to-date local research infrastructures, participates in a great number of national and international research infrastructures and has skilled support staff to enable high-quality research.

The Campus hosts Life Science Research Infrastructures, e.g. Integrated structural cell biology research infrastructure (ESFRI Instruct-ERIC), Plant Growth Facilities, a network of Research Stations and Veterinary Teaching Hospital which provides extensive clinical veterinary database and clinical research environment, and Viikki Research Farm, an urban part of the Research Stations’ network.
