Luomus DNA Laboratory

The laboratory facilities are open to university staff and associates, offering training upon request. Our staff conduct interdisciplinary research, supporting researchers across all museum departments. With our extensive experience, we routinely and successfully extract and sequence DNA from a wide range of samples.
Location

Our laboratory is located on the 3rd floor, room C303, in the Zoological Museum building at .

Methodology
  • DNA extraction (manual and automated)
  • PCR
  • Spectrophotometry and fluorescence measurements
  • Historical DNA extractions
  • NGS library preparation for historic specimens or fragmented DNA (museomics WGS)
  • NGS library preparation for fresh specimens (ddRAD-seq)
Instruments
  • Qiagen QIAcube
  • NanoDrop
  • Qubit 4
  • Tissue Lyser
  • PCR thermocyclers
  • Cooling centrifuge (Eppendorf model 5418R)
  • Milli-Q ultrapure water system
Historical DNA workspace

A specialised area designed for historical DNA extractions

To uphold a contamination-free environment, we adhere to rigorous cleaning procedures involving klorin, ultrapure water, and 70% ethanol.

Inside the room, we have incorporated a UV benchtop and stocked essential cleaning supplies and lab equipment (e.g., pipettes, a heat block, a centrifuge, a vortex, and a fridge).
