Hilda’s Spiders – Weaving science and art together

The exhibition is open at the Natural History Museum’s PopUp Balcony from April 15 to August 17, 2025.

The Finnish Museum of Natural History is best known for its scientific collections but hidden deep in its archives lay an unexpected artistic treasure. Opening on April 15, 2025, Hilda’s Spiders brings to light a long-forgotten collection of exquisite spider paintings by artist Hilda Olson (1832–1916).

Olson was Finland’s first known professional female scientific illustrator. Between 1859 and 1862, under the guidance of zoology professor Alexander von Nordmann, she created 454 meticulously detailed spider illustrations. Though originally intended for publication, the project was never completed and her work remained buried in archives for decades. Now these unique paintings are finally on display for the greater public.

Showcasing 33 original illustrations, the exhibition highlights Olson’s extraordinary precision and offers a closer look at the remarkable world of spiders and their unique abilities.
