Forest Home – Exhibition brings a natural forest to the heart of Helsinki

In Finland, natural forests have become a rarity – and for many, they remain unfamiliar. The Natural History Museum’s new exhibition Forest Home invites visitors to discover these ecosystems through photography, video installations, and scientific specimens. The exhibition opens on 5 June 2025.

Photographic artists Ritva Kovalainen and Sanni Seppo explore the rich life of natural forests in the Forest Home exhibition – from diverse habitats and life forms to the ongoing loss of forest ecosystems and biodiversity.

In Forest Home, the forest is presented as an ecological whole – and as a foundation for life. The exhibition makes extensive use of scientific collections, highlighting lesser-known but ecologically important indicator species of natural forests. Due to intensive forestry practices, many formerly common species have become irreplaceable treasures.

Forest Home brings together visual art, scientific insight and environmental reflection – and is designed to resonate with visitors of all ages.

Ritva Kovalainen and Sanni Seppo have worked together for decades exploring forest themes. Their recent collaboration focuses on natural forests, most notably in the exhibition and book Forest of the North Wind (2023).
