In Mari Kervinen’s works, the colours are primarily made from local plants or their parts, gathered in Heinävesi, North Karelia. The visual themes are based on Kervinen’s own photographs and early morning sensory impressions in nature – with imagination also playing a role in the creative process.
Plant-based pigments are inherently changeable. Over time, the artworks continue their journey and gradually transform. The exhibition invites viewers to observe how light and time affect the imagery. The colours are especially suited to dimmer spaces, offering the viewer a chance to experience the pieces differently in various environments.
The Natura Colorum exhibition is on view at the museum café from August 12 to October 12, 2025.
Research groups, artists, photographers, writers, nature enthusiasts, and others interested in nature are welcome to propose exhibitions for the Natural History Museum and the botanical gardens in Kaisaniemi and Kumpula.
