The grazing season begins in Viikki

The annual release of the cows to pasture in Viikki usually takes place in May, this grazing season begins on Saturday, May 4th, 2024. The cows will run into their summer pastures, and there will be activities for the whole family. Throughout the day, visitors will also have an opportunity to learn more about the University of Helsinki's Viikki campus.

Come and experience life on an urban dairy farm and watch the joyful release of cows to pasture, organized by Valio, the University of Helsinki, and the agricultural students' association Sampsa ry—a tradition that has been arranged over the years.

The members of Sampsa will sell refreshments in the yard area. Visitors can familiarize Valio's milk truck on site. Children will have the opportunity to test a mini-tractor course, milk toy cows, and craft pinecone cows.

Throughout the day, the cow specialists from the University of Helsinki will answer any questions concerning cows. We will also showcase the SMEAR-Agri station located on the research farm, which uses measurement results to determine the climate impacts of agriculture. Children and the young at heart can challenge themselves with a fun bean quiz.

Please prefer to use public transport and pedestrian or bike paths to get to the event, especially the new Raide-Jokeri (light rail line). Parking space on the research farm area is extremely limited.
