Management and maintenance

The Arboretum is currently managed and maintained jointly by the University of Helsinki and the City of Helsinki.

The responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the facility is carried out by the University of Helsinki’s head gardener from the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. There are no regular on-site staff on the grounds.

Every summer, the Viikki Arboretum offers internships for university students in relevant fields. Priority is given to students who have not yet completed practical training and wish to complete it in the Arboretum. If you are interested in completing an internship at the Arboretum, please contact the head gardener at arboretum@helsinki.fi. During the summer, interns under the guidance of the head gardener undertake such tasks as removal of hazardous trees, pruning trees for pedestrian and vehicle clearance, corrective pruning of trees and shrubs and occasional mechanical treatment of trees and invasive species. New tree specimens are also planted.

The principal strategic document for the Viikki Arboretum is the management and maintenance plan for 2015-2025. The plan is an accurate document of the current condition of the Arboretum. The management and maintenance plan outlines standards of care and management for the Arboretum’s grounds and natural landscapes. The plan aims to help improve the quality of the facility and overall visitor experience.
