Multi-scale Laboratories

Data and data products related to TCS Multi-Scale Laboratories are divided into four sub-domains: Analogue modeling of geologic processes, Rock and melt physical properties, Paleomagnetic and magnetic data, and Geochemical data, that cover a wide range of both spatial and temporal scales.

Responsible EPOS-Finland partners: Geological Survey of Finland GTK, University of Helsinki and University of Oulu – Kerttu Saalasti Institute (KSI)

Finnish data related to TCS Multi-Scale Laboratories come from the Geological Survey of Finland GTK, Hellabs of the University of Helsinki and the Callio Lab of the University of Oulu.

GTK performs geophysical laboratory measurements at two locations: Espoo and Rovaniemi. The measurement data include:

  • Density
  • Resistivity
  • Magnetic susceptibility
  • Remanent magnetization
  • Porosity
  • Seismic P-wave velocity
  • Gamma radiation
  • Geothermal measurements

The University of Helsinki Hellabs consist of three (3) laboratories providing analytical services and techniques for environmental and geological materials:

  • Mineralogical
  • Enviromental
  • Solid Earth geophysical laboratories

Geoscientific research in the Callio Lab includes:

  • Geochemistry
  • Microseismicity
  • Rock mechanics
  • Background radiation
  • Capsulation technologies for nuclear waste disposal
  • Technologies for geothermal energy production or energy storage.
