University of Helsinki joins the EBRAINS research infrastructure

The University of Helsinki has become a member of EBRAINS, a major European research infrastructure advancing brain science through shared data, tools and expertise. The membership strengthens the university’s position in international neuroscience and opens new avenues for collaboration across Europe

“EBRAINS membership gives us access to extensive multiscale databases, advanced in silico simulation environments, and state‑of‑the‑art computational tools for brain research. Just as important, it connects us to a vibrant European community committed to strengthening the entire brain research ecosystem,” says Satu Palva, Director of the Neuroscience Center who will represent UH and Finland’s national node at the EBRAINS.

Neuroscience at the University of Helsinki spans a broad spectrum, from human brain imaging to cellular and genetic research. EBRAINS provides an infrastructure that supports this full range of approaches, enabling researchers to integrate data and methods across scales.

The overarching mission of EBRAINS—to accelerate the development of more effective treatments, new drugs, diagnostics and preventive strategies for neurological disorders—aligns closely with the university’s strategic goals as well as Finland’s national ambitions in precision medicine.

What is EBRAINS?

EBRAINS is an European open research digital infrastructure that provides data, tools and services for brain‑related research, from the molecular and cellular levels to the whole organ. The EBRAINS infrastructure was originally built by the EU‑funded Human Brain Project and is now advancing with the support of the European Commission, a network of National Nodes and institutional partners across Europe
