The Fellows program was established to support top scientists and promising young talents in conducting their research at the University of Helsinki, and the first Fellows were selected in 2017. In spring 2022, HiLIFE was finally able to open a new call.
The Fellows call application period ran between 3.5.-31.5.2022, attracting submission of 175 eligible applications in total. This indicates ca. 14 percent (%) increase in application numbers compared to the 2017 call.
The applications fell into the three different career stages as follows:
- Starting: 40 (23%)
- Consolidator: 48 (27%)
- Advanced: 87 (50%)
The highest number of applications were received from the Faculty of Medicine, the HiLIFE Helsinki Institute of Life Science, and the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences.
Next steps on selecting the new Fellows
The HiLIFE Fellows selection process continues during summer 2022 with 1st stage evaluation by an independent review panel.
The independent review panel selects maximum of 120 applications, which will then be sent to the 2nd stage international evaluation. The results of the 1st stage evaluation are expected in early September 2022. After the 2nd stage evaluation and HiLIFE Scientific Council’s proposal, the decision on HiLIFE Fellows will be finalized by December 2022.
Based on scientific excellence, up to 60 HiLIFE Fellows will be selected from three career stage categories: starting, consolidator, and advanced researcher. HiLIFE supports the Fellows on their three-year term by steering a community through program activities relating to networking, research collaboration, and funding support, to name a few. In addition, HiLIFE will grant funding up to 50 000 €/year for approximately 35 of these Fellows for three years.
The university community will receive further updates on the 2022 HiLIFE Fellows selections during the upcoming autumn once the evaluations progress. Meanwhile, any enquiries on this topic can be sent to hilife-research-admin@helsinki.fi.
