Music flows at the Observatory

Join us for the Night of the Arts at the atmospheric Observatory of Helsinki University Museum Flame on Thursday, 14 August 2025 from 16.00 to 21.00.

Let time stop amidst a musical flow in the heart of the universe.

In the dark of the Meridian Room, you will journey for a moment to another reality, as minimalist and meditative percussion and flute music fills the old astronomical observation room. You can move freely in the space and stay for as long as you like. Martta Jämsä and Tiia Toivanen will perform a varied programme of pieces from Glass, Heiny, Satie, Sibelius, Umezaki and other composers. The musicians will perform without pause from 17.30 to 20.30, with brief intervals.

Open until 21.00, the exhibitions at the Observatory take visitors from our solar system to distant galaxies.

Entry to the event is free of charge.
Address: Kopernikuksentie 1

Fencers at the Art Room

On the Night of the Arts, Thursday 14 August 2025, from 16.30 to 19.30, the University of Helsinki Art Room will welcome some former neighbors: members of the University Fencing Club will serve as croquis models for the evening. The session is led by visual artist and University of Helsinki Drawing Master Vappu Rossi.

The evening operates on a non-stop, drop-in basis. Bring your own sketchbook or drawing pad and your preferred drawing tools. Basic materials will also be available to borrow at the Art Room. No previous experience in croquis drawing (or fencing!) is required.

Drawing and fencing share a historical connection at the University of Helsinki: both were once part of the university curriculum, considered essential skills for any well-educated individual. One of the former locations of both Fencing Hall and the Art Room, side by side, used to be the low buildings at the original courtyard of the University Main Building, designed by C. L. Engel. Today, the tradition of fencing continues at the university through the University Fencing Club. On this Night of the Arts, the Art Room is reunited with its historic neighbors as the fencers become the models!

Entry to the event is free of charge.
