Reserving material

Reservations can be made for material on loan as well as for material available at the Library. You can make reservations free of charge, but a fee will be charged for any uncollected reservations.

Log into Helka and make your reservation. You will be notified by email when the material is available to be picked up. The notification includes your personal request ID that you will need when collecting the material. Your request ID is also displayed in Helka. The request ID is personal and stays the same for all your reservations.

Pick up your reservation as self service. The reservation pickup shelf is organised by the request ID. Remember to use the self-service lending machine to check out your reservations. Reservations can only be checked out with the library card belonging to the customer who made the reservation.

Loanable material waits on the pickup shelf for 5 business days. A fee of €3 will be charged for any uncollected reservations. If you do not need the item you requested, please cancel the reservation in Helka.

Members of the University of Helsinki staff can request books (excluding textbooks) and articles in periodicals to be delivered to their desk. To qualify for this service, your customer information in Helka must include a Helsinki University internal post address and your customer group must be HU staff.

Reserving material from the closed stacks

You can reserve material from the closed stacks to be read in the library. Material from the closed stacks cannot be reserved to be used in other library locations. In Kaisa House theses are checked out at the reservation pickup area on the 3rd floor, and they should be returned during the same day. Other reference material is reserved for 20 business days.
