Atlantic languages, a small and heterogenous group of Niger-Congo languages, are not well known outside specialist circles. This volume presents the first ever overview of Atlantic languages from historical-linguistic, typological, descriptive and sociolinguistic perspectives, contributing to uncovering the range of the world’s linguistic diversity. The launch event highlights central properties of these languages and their complex sociolinguistic environment, and includes the chance to win a copy of the book.

Programme

14:15: Quiz: Test your knowledge of Atlantic languages and win a copy of the book (for in-person participants only)

14:30: What you always wanted to know about Atlantic languages but were afraid to ask (Friederike Lüpke, University of Helsinki)

14:45: Liquid salts and roundish birds: noun class semantics in Atlantic languages unravelled (Alexander Cobbinah, University of São Paulo)
