University of Helsinki faculties

HCAS collaborates actively with the faculties of the University of Helsinki, having especially strong connections with the faculties of City Centre Campus. In addition to our Kone Foundation invitational fellowships, which rely on faculty members’ proposals for candidates, our collaboration is fostered via the Host Program, the Intelligence³ project, and the annual HCAS Winter School.
INTELLIGENCE³

The project (2025–2028), funded by the University of Helsinki and coordinated by the HCAS, is a collaborative framework between the HCAS, the at Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE), and the at the Faculty of Science.

The project aims at establishing an interdisciplinary platform for the study of intelligence, a complex and timely topic where the research interests of neuroscience, computer science, and many fields in the social sciences and humanities converge. In the long run, the project seeks to create a collaborative scheme between the participating units to facilitate the continuing flow of ideas between SSH, neuroscience, and computer science.

Host Program

The HCAS Host Program facilitates collaboration between our fellows and the University’s departments and faculties by pairing incoming international fellows with a faculty member in their field. Hosts connect HCAS fellows with researchers, networks, and research themes relevant to their projects. In turn, departments and faculties benefit from the fellows’ expertise.

If you are interested in becoming a host, please email . Please note that hosts must be affiliated with the University of Helsinki.

Winter School

The is an annual intensive course for doctoral researchers in the humanities and social sciences at the University of Helsinki. Each HCAS Winter School has a theme related to a specific aspect of academic research and career building. The participants of the Winter School have a chance to learn essential skills and practices related to academic research and to discuss their own work with more experienced researchers in an interdisciplinary and international setting.

HCAS Trainee Program

HCAS actively provides traineeship opportunities for University of Helsinki students. Each academic year, the Collegium employs four trainees. Typically, one or two of them are hired through , which offers them the opportunity to gain experience in Finnish working life.

We offer our trainees an international work environment and interesting assignments related to research in the humanities and social sciences. In addition to assisting the fellows in research, our trainees carry out practical tasks related to organizing academic events, communication, and the Collegium’s weekly Fellows’ Seminar.

As of 2026, the Collegium has hosted approximately 50 trainees. The traineeship gives Master’s students an excellent opportunity to engage with academic work and practices, thereby preparing them to pursue an academic career. Of the trainees working at HCAS between 2019 and 2026, more than one fourth have become doctoral researchers. HCAS thus plays an important role in sustaining academia’s need for new talent.
