The project
The project aims at establishing an interdisciplinary platform for the study of intelligence, a complex and timely topic where the research interests of neuroscience, computer science, and many fields in the social sciences and humanities converge. In the long run, the project seeks to create a collaborative scheme between the participating units to facilitate the continuing flow of ideas between SSH, neuroscience, and computer science.
The HCAS Host Program facilitates collaboration between our fellows and the University’s departments and faculties by pairing incoming international fellows with a faculty member in their field. Hosts connect HCAS fellows with researchers, networks, and research themes relevant to their projects. In turn, departments and faculties benefit from the fellows’ expertise.

The
HCAS actively provides traineeship opportunities for University of Helsinki students. Each academic year, the Collegium employs four trainees. Typically, one or two of them are hired through
We offer our trainees an international work environment and interesting assignments related to research in the humanities and social sciences. In addition to assisting the fellows in research, our trainees carry out practical tasks related to organizing academic events, communication, and the Collegium’s weekly Fellows’ Seminar.
As of 2026, the Collegium has hosted approximately 50 trainees. The traineeship gives Master’s students an excellent opportunity to engage with academic work and practices, thereby preparing them to pursue an academic career. Of the trainees working at HCAS between 2019 and 2026, more than one fourth have become doctoral researchers. HCAS thus plays an important role in sustaining academia’s need for new talent.
