Using Structural Topic Modeling to Explore Ideologies in Political Speech

Kari Jalonen (Aalto University)

Topic modeling has emerged as a useful approach to revealing phenomenon-based constructs and empirically grounded conceptual relationships across social sciences.

My talk maps out an approach using a specific approach in this family of methods – structural topic modeling – to identify different ideological discourses used in management discussions and analyze patterns in their use. Specifically, I will discuss my ongoing analysis of strategic planning in a Finnish city organization over eleven years. This project uses structural topic modeling to complement to my qualitative work on the mobilization of different ideological perspectives in strategy work. Building on this case, my presentation focuses on the complementarities of qualitative methods and topic modeling in an effort to bring together scholars of different methodological traditions to discuss the "new ways of seeing" enabled by the emerging tools of data science.
