Macijej Janicki: The "Flows of Power" (FloPo) project: Integrating close reading, quantitative methods and a rich NLP pipeline
The "Flows of Power" project is a collaboration between computer scientists and media scholars, in which we analyze the strategies that print media use to present politically controversial topics in an objective, or objectively-sounding, manner.
In this presentation, I focus on two technical aspects of the project: the WebAnno tool used for visualization and manual evaluation of various annotations, as well as a rule-based strategy for identifying complex linguistic phenomena, like indirect quotes, negation and hedging.
