Information and the Media in the Face of War

What is the role of information and media in a Europe shook by war? Join us for the European Dialogue event at the City Centre Campus of the University of Helsinki on 23 October.

In the Face of War – European Dialogue is an event series that seeks to address the upheavals underway in Europe since the start of the war in Ukraine. The event in Helsinki on 23 October will focus on the central issue of information during war in a context of polarization, multiplication of channels, mistrust towards the media as well as disinformation campaigns.

The event is initiated by the Institut français and organized by the French Institute of Finland, the University of Helsinki, the Embassy of France in Finland and Goethe-Institut Finnland.

Join us for four discussions at Think Corner and Porthania on Wednesday 23 October at 11:00–18:00. The event will be opened by Chancellor of the University of Helsinki Kaarle Hämeri. The event speakers include Professor of Sociology Eeva Luhtakallio and Doctoral Researcher Theodora Helimäki from the Faculty of Social Sciences as well as correspondent Annastiina Heikkilä (Yle) and journalist Heikki Aittokoski (Helsingin Sanomat).

  • 11:00–12:30 Opening: Can we make ourselves immune to disinformation? (Suomen Laki Hall, Porthania, Yliopistonkatu 3)
  • 14:00–15:15 Independence in the media (Think Corner, Yliopistonkatu 4)
  • 15:15–16:30 Round table - Europe's security in the face of informational threats (Think Corner, Yliopistonkatu 4)
  • 16:45–18:00 Writing the war (Think Corner, Yliopistonkatu 4)
