Professor Jukka Mähönen appointed dean of Faculty of Law

Professor of Cooperative Law Jukka Mähönen has been appointed the new dean of the University of Helsinki Faculty of Law. His term will begin on 1 January 2026.

Following a proposal by the appointment committee, Professor Jukka Mähönen was named dean of the Faculty of Law at the Faculty Council’s meeting on 23 September 2025.

Mähönen is currently Professor of Cooperative Law at the Faculty of Law. His research and teaching have focused on corporate law as well as law and economics, often from a sustainability perspective. His 2001 doctoral thesis was entitled Tulo ja pääoma: Kirjanpidon merkitys osakeyhtiön sääntelyssä (‘Income and Equity: Role of Accounting in Regulating Limited Liability Companies’).

Mähönen brings prior experience to the deanship, having served as dean at the University of Turku from 2010 to 2015 and as a member of the University of Turku Board from 2018 to 2021. He has been a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters since 2011 and chaired the Finnish Lawyers’ Association from 2020 to 2022.

The University had announced an open call for the position of dean for a term beginning on 1 January 2026 Under the University’s Regulations, faculty councils appoint deans for a fixed term of up to five years to manage faculty operations and oversee the efficient, economical and effective performance of faculty duties.

After the dean’s appointment, faculties will begin accepting applications for vice-dean and department director positions. All deans, vice-deans and department directors are set to commence their new terms of office on 1 January 2026.
