Saturday, 15th June 2019, was the day when the Courthouse in Hasselt, Belgium, became the estrade of the 4th Hugo Sinzheimer Moot Court Competition finals. The teams were tackling timely issues regarding employee participation and collective redundancies presented to them in this year's case, which was constructed by our own Finnish Case Committee and in which Finnish labour law was applied.
The Case Committee was chaired by Ulla Liukkunen, Professor of Labour Law and Private International Law in University of Helsinki. Other members of the Committee were Assistant Professor of Labour and Social Law, Jari Murto, former President of the Labour Court, docent Jorma Saloheimo, and lawyers Hannele Vettainen and Elmiira Kutvonen. The case was drafted by Doctoral Candidate Samuli Hiilesniemi.
– In addition to making the case, our Case Committee members participated in the jury-judge panel of the competition and the student team of the University of Helsinki participated as student-judges in the competition. Our students successfully chaired pleadings from the quarterfinals among 12 European countries into the semi-finals between four of the best teams, and the ultimate final. In the final, teams from the Netherlands and Denmark faced each other in a heated debate. After two hours, the win was taken by Danish team. Next year we will be taking part in the competition again in Georgia, professor Ulla Liukkonen says.
