Welcome from the programme

Dear new student of the Master’s Programme in Human Nutrition and Food-Related Behaviour,

Warm congratulations for being accepted in the multidisciplinary HNFB programme! You are cordially welcome to the scientific community of scholars and students who are interested in various aspects of human nutrition and food-related behaviour and culture. The scientific orientation of the teachers in HNFB range from molecular nutrition to sociology of food. Thus, our curriculum offers the students the possibility to focus on various areas of interest. The studies include not only theoretical studies but also possibilities for practical training.

Welcome to the HNFB Master’s programme. We are looking forward to seeing you in August!

Studying in the programme

You have been accepted either to the Human Nutrition or the Food-Related Behaviour study track. Part of the studies are specific for the study tracks but there are also courses common to all students. The HNFB students come from different universities and backgrounds. This is why all new students start their studies with the introductory course called “The kaleidoscope of Human Nutrition and Food-related Behaviour studies”. During this course, you will get an overview of the topics of HNFB, meet the teachers and get to know your fellow students. You will also be appointed a teacher tutor who helps you to compile your personal study plan.

Ask our students

Do you wonder what it is like to study at the University of Helsinki? How is student life or housing in the City of Helsinki?

You can chat directly with our students Haleemah or Kenia or other University of Helsinki students on our chat platform. However, note that for questions related to admissions you should contact the Admission Services.

Please also note that HNFB programme has a student organization, OIKOS:

Oikos operates as a subgroup of Lipidi ry. Oikos organizes social and professional events for all bachelor's and master's students who are interested in the HNFB program. Incoming international students can already follow its activities before they arrive, and bachelor's students in Finland are encouraged to already join and participate in Oikos events! Follow on Instagram or reach out with any questions at oikos-subgroup@helsinki.fi.

The student blog on the chat platform is also a great way to get an overview of student life in Helsinki.

Orientation and tutoring

The teaching officially starts on 2 September 2024, but you should participate in the orientation activities for the new students already before classes begin (Orientation week 26 August – 1 September).  You will be assigned to a tutor group led by a senior student, or student tutor. You will learn more about studying in our programme and get support with administrative matters. This will make it easier for you to start your studies and life in Helsinki.

The detailed information concerning the orientation and student tutors will be published in the Instructions for students. Remember to select your programme in the dropdown menu to access the information relevant to your degree programme.

The Orientation week that precedes the first study period in August will provide important information on studies at the University of Helsinki in general and HNFB studies in particular. You will receive information on the Orientation week schedule from your student tutor.
