On November 27, 2024, Professor Hanna Tuominen, editor of the newly published book Arvojen yhteisö: Perspectives on the Fundamental Values of the European Union, hosted a successful launch event at Tiedekulma, Helsinki. The event brought together academics, students, and policy professionals to engage with the critical themes explored in the book.
The book addresses the core values of the European Union – freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and respect for human dignity and human rights – while examining how these principles manifest in the EU's practical activities. The contributors discuss how these values are challenged in today’s geopolitical climate, particularly with the war in Ukraine, EU enlargement, immigration, and violations of the rule of law.
The volume provides a deep dive into the politicization of these values and offers a comprehensive assessment of the EU’s future direction in a world where fundamental values are increasingly tested. Arvojen yhteisö features contributions from a range of experts: Emma Hakala (sustainable development), Saila Heinikoski (free movement), Johanna Kantola (gender equality), Heikki Mikkeli (peace), Elina Pirjatanniemi (human dignity and minority rights), Juha Raitio (rule of law), Hanna Tuominen (human rights, Finland and EU values), and Henri Vogt (democracy).
The event was well-attended, with presentations from the authors, followed by an engaging discussion.
