  • Scope of studies and planned duration: 120 ECTS credits, 2 years
     
  • Language: The language of instruction and the language of assignments is English.
     
  • Tuition fee per year (only for non-EU/EEA citizens): 13 000 EUR
Application date

The application period for studies starting in autumn 2025 is from 2 to 16 January 2025. Please note that our International Master's Programmes only have one intake per academic year. You can only submit your application during the application period.

Who can apply

The Master’s Programme in English Studies is for students interested in deepening their knowledge of English literature, language, linguistics or language teaching.

You are eligible to apply if you:

  1. have completed a first-cycle (bachelor's or equivalentdegree, or will do so by the given deadline.
  2. meet the degree language requirements. Find out more about proving your English language proficiency.
  3. have completed a sufficient amount of applicable studies. See the admission criteria at Studyinfo.fi for more details.

Suitable background studies include e.g. English language and linguistics or English literature. The applicability and sufficient scope of studies are assessed after applying. No preliminary assessments of the applicability of studies are made. Please note that excellent or native-level skills in English are not sufficient grounds for admission.

In the Master’s Programme in English Studies, you can develop your expertise in areas that are often separated in other programmes:

  • English language and linguistics
  • literature in English and
  • the teaching of English. 

In a stimulating environment with accomplished researchers and teachers, you develop work-life skills, such as skills in presentation, independent and group work and project management. Upon graduating, you will:

  • be capable of identifying the major theoretical approaches and research methods in their chosen specialisation, critically assess their strengths and limitations, and apply them to the analysis of language and literature
  • have mastered the skills how to plan and carry out a research project in some area of English studies and write a report on it
  • be able to identify and define research problems in the field of English studies and methods to investigate them
  • have strengthened your language skills, academic writing skills and presentation skills across a variety of tasks and purposes
  • know how to work as part of a team, and be able to communicate with clarity with different audiences
  • have gained expertise in literary studies
  • be able to identify and describe your expertise and skills as experts in English studies

An MA in English Studies prepares you for a variety of jobs, and our graduates have been successful in finding employment. English is used globally as the language of science, culture, business and tourism, and experts in English are required in all of these fields.

If combined with mandatory pedagogical studies, the Master’s degree in English Studies qualifies you to be a language teacher. You will also be eligible to apply for doctoral studies.
