As of 1 Jan 2025, non-EU/EEA citizens must pay an application fee when applying to programmes leading to a degree in higher education in Finland (excl. doctoral degrees and Erasmus Mundus programmes).

The fee is a one-time national fee of 100 euros that covers all applications to studies beginning in the same academic term.

The fee is not collected from applicants who have:

  • a Finnish or EU citizenship,
  • a residence card for a family member of an EU citizen in Finland,
  • a European Union Blue Card,
  • a continuous residence permit in Finland granted on grounds other than studies,
  • a permanent Finnish residence permit, or
  • a long-term resident’s EU residence permit.

The Finnish National Agency of Education will collect the application fee in connection with filling out the application form at the Finnish national education portal Studyinfo. The fee must be paid or you must upload a document proving the exempted category. Otherwise your application will not be processed.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to get an application fee waiver.

The application fee does not guarantee that you will be offered admission to studies.

Who can apply

The Master’s Programme in Chemistry and Molecular Sciences is for students who have an interest in chemistry-related areas and want to qualify for demanding chemical expert positions.

You are eligible to apply if you:

  1. have completed a first-cycle (bachelor's or equivalentdegree, or will do so by the given deadline.
  2. meet the degree language requirements. Find out more about proving your English language proficiency.

Why apply

Chemistry is a fundamental field of natural science, which exposes a huge number of applications in all areas of life and the economy. The search for novel, more sustainable practices in any area of life will require a lot of chemists’ knowledge in the near future.

The chemical industry is a major employer and one of the largest export industries in Finland. Chemists have a lot of duties in health care, environmental analysis, quality control, forensics research, commerce, educational and training institutes, and many other areas.

After completing the Master’s Programme in Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, you will:

  • Be profoundly familiar with experimental research methods in one or more fields of chemistry: analytics, synthesis, radiochemistry, polymers, spectroscopy and modeling of molecular structure, bio-based materials, chemical circulation, etc.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of the theoretical basis of your field and be able to apply this knowledge to broader topics.
  • Know how to search for and manage chemical research data and use it to plan and perform demanding duties in chemical laboratories.
  • Be able to act as a chemical expert in project planning and management, both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Be able to present your results accurately following the practices of the field, both orally and in writing, and prepare extensive papers and reports.

A completed Master’s degree also qualifies you to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e., a doctoral degree.
