Welcome to Study Atmospheric Sciences

The Master’s Programme in Atmospheric Sciences invites our newly admitted students starting their studies in autumn 2025 to take a moment to explore this page and get to know us better. Our students, staff and faculty are eager to welcome you!

The admission results (application round from 2 Jan 2025 to 16 Jan 2025) have been sent to the applicants to the e-mail address given on their application form. The results can also be found in the My Studyinfo -service.

Greetings from the programme

You are admitted to the Master Program in Atmospheric Sciences, congratulations! The focus of our programme is on the Earth system: Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere, and their interconnections. Teaching and supervision in the programme are provided by the Institute for the Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), one of the research leaders in the Atmospheric and Earth System sciences worldwide.

We believe that multidisciplinary and holistic approach are the key to solve the challenges faced by our planet. Our study tracks offer solid basis in Meteorology, Physics of the Hydrosphere, Aerosol Physics, Atmospheric Chemistry or Biogeochemical Cycles. You can learn and apply state-of-the-art methods of research, from lab experiments and observations (in-situ and remote sensing) to modelling and data science/machine learning.

We consider phenomena and processes across the scales: from nanoparticles to weather systems, from long-term trends to extreme events, and all over the planet: from Arctic tundra and boreal forest to Southern Ocean and megacities. During your studies, you will gain climate expertise to shape future career in academia, industry, or elsewhere.

On behalf of the programme, welcome!

Dmitri Moisseev,
Programme Director

Studying in the programme

You are required to select a study track, but keep in mind that the degree program offers flexibility, enabling you to customize your studies. Not sure yet if you want to pursue a specific study track and need help in drafting the study plan? In ATM301 Atmospheric and Earth Sciences Today, which is offered every year in the period I, you will get more practical information about studies in our programme and our study tracks.

To support you in setting and achieving your academic goals, you will be assigned an academic mentor (PSP supervisor) at the start of your studies. The academic mentor will work with you to finalize your initial study plan and track your progress throughout your studies. Be sure to review the degree structure and example study paths, keeping in mind that these examples are meant to guide you in creating your own unique path. You can begin planning your studies now. Additionally, please refer to the “Instructions for Students” for guidance on planning your studies.

We are striving to make our students from all study tracks to be a part of the Atmospheric Science community. To this end, we regularly organize joint activities and events for students, teachers, and other staff members. One such event is our popular Pizza Fridays, where you can relax, socialize, and share your ideas, questions, or comments.

We are excited to see the contributions you will make to our program and look forward to supporting you throughout your studies. If you have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Greetings from students

Congratulations for being admitted to the programme! We would like to warmly welcome you to share your future years of studies with us, your fellow atmospheric science students!

Preparing for your studies

Please note that each study track may have specific prerequisites, which can include obligatory courses from Bachelor studies. To ensure you meet the requirements for your chosen study track, please check the prerequisites and courses on our site Programme Contents and Prerequisites. If you find that you are missing some required courses, they can be taken during your studies.

You can already start by checking out the open online courses offered by the Climate University network. Climate University provides free online courses for universities and everyone who wants to make the sustainability transition in the society real. The courses are made in multidisciplinary collaboration of several universities in Finland. Once you begin your studies in Helsinki, your study credits will be registered.

Courses on Digicampus:

  • ATM386 Climate.now (2 cr) - Can be included as an obligatory course or taken as a 5 cr version in Study Period II: ATM302 Climate.now.
  • ATM397 Forests and Climate Change (2 cr) - Can be included in optional advanced studies.
  • ATM383 Leadership for sustainable change (2 cr) - Alternative to ATM373 (5 cr) in Study Period III.

Orientation and tutoring

The teaching officially starts on 25 August 2025 with an intensive period, but you should participate in the orientation activities (Orientation Week: 26–29 August 2025) for the new students. You will be assigned to a tutor group led by a senior student, or student tutor. You will learn more about studying in our programme and get support with administrative matters. This will make it easier for you to start your studies and life in Helsinki.

You will be assigned to a tutor group led by a student tutor. During the orientation activities and in the tutor group, you will learn more about studying in our programme, get support with administrative matters and get introduced to the university campuses and facilities. This will make it easier for you to start your studies and life in Helsinki.

The detailed information and schedule concerning your orientation and tutoring will be published in the summer. Make sure the right programme is selected in the dropdown menu in order to access the correct information.

Your campus

As a student in this programme, the Kumpula campus will be your home base. It is dedicated to research and teaching in the exact natural sciences and one of the largest clusters of scientific competence in the Nordic countries.

You can visit the Kumpula Campus comfortably from your own sofa. The virtual campus tours take you through the campus facilities and some laboratories.

Find out how the staff and students describe the collaborative nature of degree programmes and the atmosphere at the campus.

Helsinki Think Company brings together students, researchers and people interested in entrepreneurship. They also have a workspace at the Kumpula campus and offer free co-working spaces, boot camps, idea accelerator programmes, hackathons, mentoring and a community of like-minded individuals.

Learning environments

Observations are an essential part of atmospheric sciences, and this is reflected in our Master programme. During intensive study periods in autumn and spring, we provide intensive courses focused on field measurements or data analyses:

The courses are often held at the research station SMEAR II located in the boreal forest near village Hyytiälä in Southern Finland. SMEAR II run by INAR is our flagship station, where hundreds of variables have been measured in the atmosphere, soil, water and vegetation every second during more than 25 years. More stations and measurement sites can be found all over Finland, including SMEAR-Agri and SMEAR III close to the Master programme study sites, Viikki and Kumpula campuses.

UNITalent Programme

The international students in the Master's Programme in Atmospheric Sciences can apply to the UNITalent Programme. It is designed to support international students in building professional networks in Finland and to gain insight into field specific working life. Students take part by attending monthly group meetings with hosting organisation for a period of three months. During the programme, the University Career Services also provides training in career management skills.
