About

Legal Tech Lab

Legal Tech Lab is an interdisciplinary hub at the Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki. The Lab examines and experiments on legal tech and digitalization of legal practices.

The Lab’s objective is to raise awareness about the possibilities of legal tech, provide critical insights into technology and create a one-stop-shop for academic and practical information on digitalization of legal practices both nationally and globally. In a manner of speaking, the Legal Tech Lab is the law faculty’s in-house start-up, which combines hands-on experimentation with legal technology with in-depth academic research.

Our mission statement is to bring something new to the legal field: a new way of looking at legal services, new tools to facilitate participation and a forward-looking mindset. Many legal processes are designed for professional lawyers. The Lab, in turn, places the end user at the centre of legal practices. Law is changing as a result of digitalization and we need to set the pace for this change.

Legal Tech Con 2018

"The difficulty lies, not in the new ideas, but in escaping from the old ones, which ramify, for those brought up as most of us have been, into every corner of our minds.” - John Maynard Keynes

This year’s Legal Tech Lab conference explores the use of Artificial Intelligence in the legal practice, focusing on legal, ethical and its practical implications towards the field.

We will focus on questions such as:

  • How can the legal sector survive the ‘AI-pocalypse’?
  • What kind of challenges are we facing with the algorithmic decision-making?
  • What do we need from the future generation of lawyers?
  • How will legal AI shape the future lawyers?
