Afternoon excursion on Wednesday afternoon is included in the congress fee. There are two options you can choose from: guided tour and charter cruise.
Guided tour in Oodi, Helsinki Central Library and in Musiikkitalo (“Helsinki Music Centre”) takes place in the heart of the city centre. Oodi complements the cultural and media hub formed by Helsinki Music Centre, Finlandia Hall, Sanoma House and the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma. Oodi is a non-commercial, urban public space that is open to all, right opposite the Parliament Building. Oodi opened in December 2018 and was named already before its first birthday “Finland’s most beautiful building” (IS.fi) and “Public Library of the Year” in 2019 (IFLA).
Musiikkitalo opened in 2011. It is an acoustically first-class concert hall as well as other facilities providing a wide range of musical experiences for people of all ages and a place to study music. The residents of Musiikkitalo are Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Sibelius Academy, Uniarts Helsinki. Coffee included. English-speaking guide.
The walking tour starts from the info desk of Helsinki Central Library Oodi (Töölönlahdenkatu 4).
Helsinki, “Pearl of the Baltic Sea”, includes over 300 islands, many of which can be reached via ferries. Helsinki’s unique maritime character is something very special. Many of the newest city districts are being built on islands by the open sea and on the waterfront. Family-owned Sunlines (established in 1956) takes us on M/S Emma for a three-hour private charter cruise in the beautiful archipelago of Helsinki. Just relax and enjoy the sun and sea breeze with the company of fellow onomasticians, and listen to expert presentations on city development strategy, city sustainability and place names in the Finnish archipelago. All presentations in English. Coffee included. Beverages can be bought from the bar on board. Place of departure and return is in Kauppatori, only 600 metres from the congress venue Porthania. Sunlines holds the Sustainable Travel Finland label.
The cruise starts from the eastern end of the Kauppatori harbour area. The ship, M/S Emma, can be recognised by the Sunlines shipping company logo.
