Study tracks

The Bachelor's Programme in Science has four study tracks: mathematics and statistiucs, physics, chemistry, and computer and data science.

Bachelor's Programme in Science has four study tracks:

  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Computer and Data Science

You can select any of these study tracks according to your preferences at the beginning of your studies. The track determines which courses you should take. The programme allows you to specialize in your chosen study track or follow an interdisciplinary education by also taking courses from other study tracks.

The choice of the study track and the optinal studies also determines which MSc programme the student will be able to continue in. More information in the Master's studies page.

Detailed degree structure and course descriptions can be found in the Degree Structure page.

Mathematics and statistics

The mathematics and statistics study track emphasises mathematics as a science of its own and its importance in statistics. It offers an introduction both to the key concepts and methods of modern mathematics as well as a wider view on the exact world of mathematics, studying exactly defined concepts and the properties and relationships that emerge among these. In addition, the elective module offers an introduction to basics of statistical modelling, inference and computation.

The study track offers a solid ground for continuing higher level studies in mathematics and statistics. Depending on the optional studies chosen, the track directs the students towards either

  • the world of pure mathematics or mathematical statistics, with research questions arising from within theoretical settings.
  • applied mathematics or statistics where mathematical and statistical tools are used to solve questions arising in other areas such as the physical world around us.
Physics

In the physics study track, you'll explore the fundamental principles and modern experimental and computational (or theoretical) techniques of physics, gaining insights into the nature of the physical world and the evolving role of science and technology in shaping our future society.

After completing the common basic and subject studies (60 cr), you can customize your academic path by choosing elective courses related to topics like climate change, advanced materials, space exploration, quantum phenomena, and many others.

This study track offers a foundation for your future studies in selected master's programs, promoting a comprehensive understanding of physics and its diverse interdisciplinary applications.

Chemistry

In the chemistry study track, you learn about the fundamental concepts and modern experimental methods of chemistry, which relate to an understanding of the nature and the role of science and new technologies in the society. Bioeconomics, circular economy, future technological advancements, novel energy sources, food production, clean water and air, as well as health care set challenges that require a strong knowledge of chemistry.

In the chemistry study track, you build a foundation that you can use to bring yourself towards synthetic expertise, modern materials science, emerging spectroscopy methods or medicinal chemistry, for example.

Computer and data science

In the study track of computer and data science, you acquire the skills to build modern software both by doing hands-on exercises and projects and by studying the fundamental ideas underlying how computers work and how they can be used efficiently. You also get an introduction to the new possibilities created by artificial intelligence and the analysis of large masses of data.

Studies in mathematics are a necessary foundation for the more advanced concepts in computer science, in particular going beyond the bachelor's level.
