We invite our newly admitted Master’s students starting their studies in autumn 2020 to take a moment to explore this page and get to know us better. Our students, staff and faculty are eager to welcome you to campus!

The admission results for the Master's Programme in Data Science for the application round on 3 Dec 2019 - 10 Jan 2020 have been sent to all applicants to the e-mail address given on their application form. The results can also be found by logging into the My Studyinfo –service.

Congratulations! You have been accepted in the Master’s Programme in Data Science at the University of Helsinki. The University of Helsinki is among the top 1% of the world’s research universities, and we in the Master’s Programme in Data Science are very excited at the possibility of you joining our community.

This page gives you some information on studying in our programme, and you have already received a letter with more information especially about the skills we assume that you have at the beginning of your studies. You will also receive more information from the Admission Services of the University of Helsinki during the spring and summer regarding how to accept the study place and practical logistics of moving to Helsinki. In case you have any questions, feel free to send us an email at data-science-studies@helsinki.fi.

The University of Helsinki is closely monitoring the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and taking measures following the instructions by the authorities. Our top priority is always the health, welfare and safety of our students and staff.

New students accepted in the December 2019 - January 2020 application round, please see specific information regarding the current exceptional situation on the University website.

You can follow the general coronavirus situation at the University of Helsinki and current arrangements on the University website.

Dear fellow students, congratulations!

We are so happy to welcome you to our Data Science programme! You are about to embark on a life-changing adventure as we did a few years ago. The programme has been running for a few years now and we have formed a very close community of students, of friends. We, international students, have decided to write down some of our experiences for you. Hopefully these paragraphs will fill you with anticipation of the amazing two years that you’re about to experience!

The University of Helsinki is a strongly research-oriented university, which shows in our teaching and the skills we require from our students. In addition to the basic skills of understanding and remembering, we expect you to be able to apply your skills and knowledge to different problems, as well as to analyse, evaluate, and create new information based on existing material.

We have a very active data science community at the University of Helsinki and a long-standing tradition of student engagement, peer support, and active collaboration between students and staff. We regularly organise joint activities and events for students, teachers, and other staff members, and if you have any ideas, questions, or problems, you have a chance to get help and get your voice heard.

We highly recommend you use the time in the summer to learn the Python programming language, in case you are not already familiar with it. It is commonly used by many data science tools, and it allows you to process data more efficiently than Java. The first courses in the programme also contain short Python tutorials for those not familiar with the language, but they are more useful for you, if you already have looked into Python before arriving here.

You can also take our new online course Data Analysis with Python. The course assumes you know basic programming and teaches the basics of Python for data science. The course is available from 1st June onwards.

In mathematics, you should be familiar with the basic rules of linear algebra, understand and be able to apply differential and integral calculus in univariate settings and understand their extensions in higher dimensional problems. In probability theory, you need to understand and be able to apply basic sum and product rules of probabilities as well as marginal and conditional probabilities. If you need to brush up on these topics, please see for example the Mathematics for Machine Learning book.

Starting in 2020, the Master's Programme Data Science is participating in the new HelsinkiUNI International Talent Programme (HITP). It is a group mentoring programme where Finnish companies and international students are brought together to share ideas and to learn from each other.  The aim is to support international students in building professional networks in Finland and to gain insight into local working life.

What can you as an international student gain from HITP?

  • If your application is successful, you are placed in a group and assigned a mentor from a Finnish company or organisation. When applying, you can indicate which of the participating companies interest you the most.

  • You will receive support in growing your network among both professionals and fellow students. During the programme, your group will meet 4–5 times on the company premises. Themes for the meet-ups include a company introduction and an overview of current competency requirements in that specific field. You will also get to present your own skills to the company.

  • When the HITP has been completed, the goal is that cooperation can continue between you and the company if both parties wish to do so.

International data science students will have a chance to apply to the HelsinkiUNI International Talent Programme in autumn 2020.

Teaching for the academic year 2020-2021 officially starts on 31st August 2020, but it is highly recommended participate in the orientation activities for the new students already before the classes begin. You will be assigned to a tutor group led by a student tutor. During the orientation activities and in the tutor group, you will learn more about studying in our programme, get support with administrative matters and visit the university campuses and facilities. This will make it easier for you to start your studies and life in Helsinki.

The detailed information concerning the orientation and student tutors will be published on the Instructions for Students -website. Remember to select the right programme in the dropdown menu in order to access the correct information.
